This pen is the exact one you will be getting. It is awaiting your personalization! The first few photos show the pen itself, which is made from salvaged white Corian or similar hard-surface countertop material. The fittings are chrome and it has a wide cushioned rubber grip. It uses Parker refills. The size is fatter than typical, about the size of a highlighter, as you can see in the photo, making it great for men. It will arrive in a gift box.

The remaining photos are examples of personalization you might like for your pen. You might choose a portrait of your furry friend, a monogram, a wedding date or anniversary, or something related to a favorite hobby. The last photo shows the steps I use to take your picture and transform it into black and white scrimshaw.

Each pen is handmade by me and my grandpa, turned on a lathe and assembled. I then do the scrimshaw artwork by carving the design into the surface with a sharp awl or scribe. Fine lines and tiny dots known as stippling are used to create the design. Next, the lines are filled with black india ink by rubbing it across the design and removing the excess. Occasionally color ink is used as well. Each color has to be done in a separate step by repeating that process. As a final step, the artwork is sealed with archival wax for protection and preservation. It is a very meticulous and detail-oriented form of artwork.

Scrimshaw is an historic american art form that sailors used to pass the time while out on long voyages. They used whatever materials they had available, such as ivory whale's teeth, pocket knives, sail needles and soot. Today, in the interest of high quality animal welfare, ivory alternatives are frequently used.
