A big chunk of a downed silver maple tree escaped the fireplace and continues its life as an elegant bowl. This bowl, carved with a combination of power and hand tools, features a subtle lip around its edge that morphs into handles on the end, and a thin base that creates a strong shadow line, separating it from the surface on which it rests. The source wood sat on the ground for some time before I reclaimed it, and this experience is expressed in a number of insect holes surrounded by black stains. The high quality stresses generated as the wood dried created small stress cracks on the inside and outside (see detail photos), but these do not threaten the bowl's integrity. Because the bowl was carved with hand tools, its surface possesses small ripples that are discernible only by touch or glancing light. The bowl is 18.2” long, 10.2” wide and 3” high. It is finished with multiple coats of Danish oil, sanded between coats to create a soft luster and ultrasmooth finish. The finish is not waterproof or guaranteed food safe, but the bowl is suitable for holding fruit, nuts, candy or similar items. The finish is not waterproof, and the bowl should not be immersed, but it can be cleaned with a lightly dampened cloth.
