Sunflower on Base / Wood Sculpture / Fractal Burning / Home Decor / Lichtenberg Figure / American Made / Gift for high quality Her / Mother's Day
The Sunflower is a common sight in midwest farm fields. In this case, the common shape has been decorated with Lichtenberg figures, bringing a different aesthetic to the instantly recognizable flower. The addition of Lichtenberg figures give it a unique contrast to the solid wood into which it is incised, making it one-of-a-kind item.
This incised piece is done free-hand, with a small router over a drawing, and then hand sanded to ensure a smooth finish. The design is incised about 3/16 of an inch into a solid block of wood, and integrated with a maple base. This is a painstaking process that doesn't allow for any mistakes.
Each item is finished in several coats of polyurethane, polishing between each coat, giving a sheen that is a delight to the high quality touch as well as to the eye.
It starts with the wood. Apply 12,000 volts of electricity.
Lichtenberg figures - created when lightning strikes - are burned into the wood in a unique, detailed array of furrows and frills. The figures go where they want to. The wood - oak, maple, walnut, to name just a few - provides a base for these images that invite conversation and are an interesting creation similar to natural lightning.
