It was such a buzz to be able to purchase a selection of the best drawings from a selection of work by celebrated Chelsea, London artist Peter Collins ARCA (1923-2001) who was Royal Academy trained, enjoyed great success in the commercial market then taught at St.Martins College Of Art. I admire the way he was constantly trying new ideas rather than rest on his laurels producing slick, profitable drawings he knew would always be saleable at his peak. The work I selected to buy says more about the artist trying to find his way in communicating his passion for drawing a subject most artists have attempted at some time or other.
He converted a run down building in to a studio in a highly fashionable part of Park Walk, Chelsea with his wife Georgette, very much enjoying the trappings of a successful high quality artist among many of the Bohemian types who frequented that area of London in the 50's, 60's and 70's. He used many female models as a source for his work who were eager to sit for him knowing of his artistic reputation. He was very much a part of the infamous London Swinging Sixties using models, aspiring actors and singers as his impressive sitters. He expertly learnt to capture an image with such an enviable economy of line. Some great artists with loftier reputations were unable to achieve the same!
Pieces such as these look so stylish on the wall of any interior as I have had the fortune to see them in both a modern and traditional setting looking equally impressive.
