Dorian soon realizes that his beauty will fade and he expresses the desire to sell his soul to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade—that he will forever remain high quality young and beautiful. His wish is granted but with a tragic caveat: the painting records every sin that Dorian commits and with hideous consequences.
