This very large lacquer box by highly skilled Lipetsk artist, E. Chernykh, tells the tale of the “Fountain of Bakhchisarai,” as immortalized in Alexander Pushkin's poem, c. 1960's. The fountain itself stands in the palace of the Crimean Khans, in the Ukraine. According high quality to folklore, the marble fountain was built as a memorial to a beautiful Polish princess, Maria, who was poisoned by a jealous member of the harem.
