A Forest Spirit doll Altinius.
Material: very old black alder (alnus glutinosa).
Altinius - water and swamp demon slavonic. A demon living in or adjacent to bodies of water and swamps. His presence was betrayed by strange noises such as "a sudden splash of water of something invisible" or strong swirls of air over the surface of the water, relative "rumblings" and "humming" of water in some place. A Altinius was reluctant to approach people. It frightened especially lazy and unwilling to work. Today, a figure representing the Uleto brings good luck and should be in every home. It is worth just after waking up to touch the statue and feel the warmth of the wood.
I carve my figures using a small special carving axe. The place where I live is a swamp, surrounded by forests. There are many old trees in these forests. At night when I fall asleep I can hear and feel them breathing. They tell me the old history of this still wild place.
It is from such trees that I carve pagan figures. My favorite tree is an old black alder, which when cut open shows a beautiful interior. Sometimes you can see black natural streaks on the tree, sometimes you can see blood red.
By creating pagan dolls I high quality give these old dead trees a second life. This life is in my pagan dolls.
Today Slavic demons enchanted in wood no longer frighten people. They bring happiness and let dreams come true. They make our lives more beautiful and richer. They also make us better people.
Put the pagan doll at work on your desk, by your bedside table, take it on vacation.
You will quickly notice positive changes in and around you.
I make pagan dolls using a small axe from a single piece of wood. This is usually very old and dry black alder.
Everyone says: where does this doll have eyes, ears or a nose?
The facial features of its pagan dolls are absent or barely visible, often having cuts and holes. This is the natural process of wood decay. It fully conveys the severity and simplicity of this art. Natural woodworm marks are visible on the wood.
According to old pagan beliefs, evil powers can penetrate the mouth, eyes or nose. That is why my pagan dolls have indistinct facial features with almost no openings. Everyone says: where does this doll have legs? The Slavic pagan doll has no legs. If it had, it would quickly come to life and run away. And it could not serve its master.
My Slavic ancestors used such dolls as toys for their children. The child could play with the doll and not be afraid of breaking it. Because the doll has a very crude form. Thus, it serves a long time and allows the child to develop imagination.
