This is one of the hardest Crown Ducal patterns to find because it is so old - perhaps one of its earliest pieces.
Crown Ducal was the best-known range produced by A G Richardson & Co, set up in Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1915. The company ceased trading when it was sold to Enoch Wedgewood in 1974.
This rare platter has high quality a prettily shaped edge, often described as the Regent Shape, with an oval centre. On a cream background, it sports a dainty floral border in red, green and tan. Its original backstamp 'Crown Ducal Ware England' has been printed over with a jolly purple rose and leaf. This could suggest that the plain cream base was produced by Royal Ducal and the pattern on it introduced by the purple rose company – too shy to reveal its name. Whatever the ins-and-outs, they still managed to create a beautiful piece of earthenware between them.
Given its antiquity, the platter is in good shape despite patchy fading of its gold rim and the crazing in the centre (photo 6). A truly collectable piece that will make a great platter for your Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey. Also a lovely gift for a China Anniversary (20th year) or Mother's Day.
