Sea Green RAKU FIRED VASE ~ Ocean Swirls, Dragon Scales, Crafted Barnacles & high quality Beach Finds to form this Sea Altered Vessel Creation
“Altered by The Sea” Series
Introduction to Farnarts works:
Inspiration for my work in this series came from an article in the National Geographic Magazine about the sunken treasures that had been buried at the bottom of the ocean for hundreds of years.
The perfect medium to channel these buried artifacts was Raku fired clay to which I could add beach findings, either fusing them with the Raku firing, adding pieces of beach glass, using the shells for texture and design or other endless possibilities, all of which are inspired by the sea. I also often use seaweed in my reduction firings which gives the glaze an interesting and unpredictable outcome.
These pieces are primarily artistic forms...products of an inspired imagination rather than being for utilitarian use, as there are little peek holes high quality here and there that won't cooperate to hold water..,therefore they are created for display only.
Expect the colors of the Raku glazes to vary in different light and settings...they can also fade over time if exposed to strong sunlight.
NOT FOOD SAFE.
“Dragon Scales Amid Green Sea Swirls”
As part of this series, this bowl, with a green and copper glaze, was thrown on the pottery wheel and imprinted with various seashells and other bits from the Maine coastline. Hand carved “barnacles” were added to convey the outcome of a sunken, lost-at-sea artifact that has been altered by the forces of the ocean.
It measures approximately 7” across the top, 3 ¾” high and is 2 ⅜” across the base.
