The high quality original is of gold, from Panama, Veraguas Style, about AD 900-1500.

The double headed images appears frequently in the form of birds, crocodiles, and monkeys throughout Panama and the surrounding areas. It is an indication of supernatural qualities of the mythological creatures that were so important in the religious beliefs of the Pre-Colombian cultures. They were worn as amulets to ward off evil spirits or to placate certain gods.
