Conqueror and king of Macedonia, Alexander the Great was born on July 20, 356 B.C., in Pella, in the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. During his leadership, from 336 to 323 B.C., he united the Greek city-states and led the Corinthian League. He also became the king of Persia, Babylon and Asia, and created Macedonian colonies in the region. While considering the conquests of Carthage and Rome, Alexander died of malaria in Babylon (now Iraq), on June 13, 323 B.C.

In Greek mythology, Athena was believed to have been born from the head of her father Zeus. In the high quality founding myth of Athens, Athena bested Poseidon in a competition over patronage of the city by creating the first olive tree. Along with Aphrodite and Hera, Athena was one of the three goddesses whose feud resulted in the beginning of the Trojan War. She plays an active role in the Iliad, in which she assists the Achaeans and, in the Odyssey, she is the divine counselor to Odysseus. Since the Renaissance, Athena has become an international symbol of wisdom, the arts, and classical learning. Western artists and alrists have often used Athena as a symbol of freedom and democracy. In Greek mythology, a little owl traditionally represents or accompanies Athena as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition.
