Batik tulis is the most traditional form of batik in the country of Indonesia. It uses a technique called wax resist dyeing, and the entire process can take anywhere from 1 month to even a year. Due to the complex process and effort, batik tulis is the most expensive form of batik. The designs, motifs, and colors of the batik can depict the origin or region, societal status, and purpose of usage. The final product of the batik will always be different and cannot be made the same exact way.
This batik is from the island of Madura. The distinct characteristics of batik from Madura are its bold colors and patterns. Most of the people of Madura works as fisherman, which is why common motifs of this region includes boats, sea waves, fish, and shrimps. They are also influenced by a wide range of cultures which is shown by their other motifs of birds, butterflies, flower bouquets, phoenix, and Persian peacocks. Some of the batik from Madura could take 1 month to 1 year to produce.
The unique thing about batik Madura is the process of gentongan. This process uses a barrel to soak the batik cloth. This technique is mostly done for a particular color—indigo (although other colors such as red, yellow, and green are also used). The cloth is soaked using nyamplung oil and ash from wood burning stoves. A craftsmen would dip this cloth for 24 hours and repeat the process every day for the next month or even 6 months depending on their desired color(s). The coloring of the barrel is the most important and difficult process. This specific batik is NOT a gentongan.
Due to the way this specific batik is processed, the cotton fabric on this specific batik tulis isn't as soft and requires some hand washing and wear in order for the cotton to become softer.
