NOTES Very rare and unusual hand-thrown bowl by Charles Counts. The “Beaver Ridge” signature on the bottom indicates that the work was created 1960s. A true Renaissance man who loved art and writing, Counts was committed to preserving traditional Appalachian art and crafts through his significant and extensive work in pottery, textiles/weaving, rug hooking, drawing, painting, and quilting. Counts' work was influenced by nature, and he studied at the University of Southern California and was a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. In 1959, he founded and operated Beaver Ridge Pottery near Knoxville high quality, Tennessee. Later, Counts and his wife formed Rising Fawn studio in Lookout Mountain, GA, where he created pottery and quilts for over twenty years.
