This beautiful hand mirror was my grandmother's - a gift to her as a young girl (she was born in 1900). It is engraved with her name, "Carrie".
I used a very gentle process to remove much of the tarnish that had accumulated over the past 50 years it's been in my possession, though there are still a couple of small areas that could use additional cleaning, particularly near the engraved name. I intentionally left the deeper areas of the relief design tarnished, as I think the contrast provides a more elegant look to this very old piece. But the silver could be brought back to a full shine with a little work, if desired.
The piece is 9 1/4" long, with a diameter of 5"; the diameter of the beveled, inset mirror is 4 1/2". The mirror itself shows a bit of age, with some crackling behind the glass along the edge; high quality however the main part of the mirror is clear of blemishes and is still very useable for viewing/reflecting purposes.
As the photos show, there's a "Pat. Applied For" stamp along one edge, and a "Sterling 925 Fine" stamp on the opposite edge. The latter confirms that the hand mirror was created of Sterling Silver. I was unable to find out anything about the patent applied for stamp, or what appear to be maker markings on either side of the sterling designation.
The scroll and leaf relief design is truly lovely.
