Kintsugi 金継ぎ
The word "Kintsugi" (金継ぎ) comes from the Japanese. Kin (gold) and Tsugi (join) and therefore literally means “to join with gold.” The art of Kintsugi is called "Kintsukuroi" (金繕い), meaning "mending with gold." This classic technique, discovered in the fifteenth century, invites us to repair a broken object by enhancing its scars with real gold powder instead of trying to hide them. In Zen aesthetics, the broken pieces of an accidentally-smashed pot should be carefully picked up, reassembled and then joined together with lacquer inflected with a very luxuriant gold powder to render the fault-lines beautiful and strong. The precious veins of gold are there to emphasize that breaks have a philosophically-rich merit all of their own. This is a long and extremely accurate repairing process with many steps, taking several weeks or even months. It is even said that it sometimes takes a whole year to achieve the best Kintsugi.
