A beautiful batik sarong from Pekalongan in Java. Tulis is the Indonesian word used to describe a batik that is totally handmade by "kanting" (pouring) the wax onto the material. It is not made by stamp or by mechanically printing onto the material. This is the traditional and most labour intensive way of making a batik.

Pekalongan is a famous batik centre on the north coast of Java where the Chinese first introduced synthetic dyes and floral motifs. This stunning batik has a central panel with a dark chocolate brown background with a classic floral and butterflies spay design in brown, purple, green, blue and white. The rest of the batik has a steel blue background and the same design. it is on good soft cotton and in good condition. It is signed

A Sarong is made by taking a long piece of batik and sewing the two short edges together to form a tube. Mostly made for use by women. This one is 107cm high by 188cm long (if opened up).
