Topaz occurs in a wide range of colors. This beautiful shade of blue is called Swiss Blue. As most Topaz is these days, it is heat treated to get this brilliant color.
The name Topaz may come from the Sanskrit word tapas, meaning heat or fire. Steeped in mystery, topaz has been believed since ancient times to have the protective power to make its wearer invincible, and to enhance one's eyesight as well as wisdom.
Blue topaz in nature is very rare indeed and tends to be a very pale blue. The vivid blues available on the market have all been produced by treatment and enhancement of colorless white topaz - with irradiation and often also with heat. The color change in blue topaz is considered permanent and stable. In the past, there was some controversy about the safety of this treatment for the consumer, but in July of 2007, the American Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) showed none of the enhanced topaz material posed health risks to consumers.

In traditional Indian belief systems, topaz is said to unlock the throat chakra, which facilitates communication and self-expression. Therefore, topaz is thought to be beneficial to artists, writers, public speakers and others who are concerned with self-expression. Some believe that topaz can promote virility in men.
