• Antique Frog Mug, Staffordshire potteries beer mug, hand painted transferware, English, mid- 19th century
• The mug is in usable/good condition with no cracks, but crazing and chips/wear to the glaze - usage is apparent as it is an antique.
• Measures: 5.5 inches with handle x 4.25 inches high; 17.5oz/500ml; 490grams before packing
• This is a very rare and atypical find today, but at the time it was a better known entertaining vessel. These type of mugs were first produced around 1750 but became very popular during the first quarter of the 19th Century. It is most likely a Staffordshire potteries frog mug, decorated with brown transferware and hand paint overlay. The mug depicts a countryside scene and a high quality castle by the coast with a young lady conversing with a shepherd under a tree. While the other side depicts a man and 2 ladies picking and collecting fruit into baskets. The inside bottom has a brown frog figure that would have appeared as the inebriated drinker emptied the mug and was intended to shock him!
