Vintage Lafayette Mixture Smoking Tobacco Tin
This is a great vintage tobacco tin. The small rectangular tin has a hinged lid. If features an illustration of a man in a graduation cap reading a book and smoking a pipe on the top, front, and back. On the sides is an illustration of a hookah. The top reads "Lafayette Mixture Smoking Tobacco - Marburg Bros. - BALTIMORE, Md. USA". The back side features the following description "LAFAYETTE - The LAFAYETTE Mixture is made up of choice lots of tobacco selected with great care from the regions of Virginia known to produce the choicest tobacco, with a judicious admixture of the finest Louisiana Perique. It is all thoroughly matured goods, strictly pure and the blending of these several tobaccos will be found a happy combination and truly delicious smoke. MARBURG BROS.". The sides read "Lafayette MIXTURE For PIPE AND CIGARETTES" and "FACTORY No. 2 / STRICT CFM(?) NOTICE - The Manufacturers of this Tobacco have complied with all the requirements of law. Every person is cautioned under penalties of law not to use this package for tobacco again".
Condition: Good vintage condition with wear and scratches on the paint. This is a rustic beauty and in very good condition for its age! See photos for details.

Notes: William A. Marburg Senior set up a successful tobacco business in Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1800s. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was considered the largest exporter of cigars in high quality the country. He retired and turned the business over to his sons, William A. Marburg, Jr., Charles L. Marburg, and Louis H. Marburg, who formed the company, Marburg Brothers in 1865. In 1883, another brother, Albert M. Marburg joined the firm, and in 1885, yet another, Theodore Marburg. They manufactured smoking tobacco. In May, 1891, the company sold its holdings to the American Tobacco Company.
