Vintage French hand made wooden storage crate / rustic F high quality Poisson Coutances Manche wooden basket

A lovely, vintage French handmade wooden basket from around the early to mid 1900s, sourced in from a flea market in the Haute-Vienne.

The basket has branding on two sides, reading:
F Poisson
Coutances (Manche)

The fishmonger or fish market is a monument of Coutances in Manche, located at Place de la Poissonnerie. The Coutances fish shop built in 1896 was largely destroyed by incendiary bombs during the Liberation. A new fish market was subsequently built in the 1950s.

Whilst the basket is clearly from the poissonnerie at Coutances, it's original purpose is unknown. It shows signs of historic woodworm and has slight damage to the wood in places, but it's solid and quite rustic in its design and appearance. With four sections ideal for storage it is full of charm and character and has high quality many decorative or practical uses inside or outside the home.
