Fabric: Made from high quality leather, durable polyester lining, and a unique Mola design made from cotton.

Process: The Mola (meaning clothes or blouse in Kuna language) are handmade by using multiple layers of differently coloured fabric which are sewn together and then cut through to reveal the colour, forming the shapes and design. A technique called “reverse applique” or “dulegaya” in the Kuna high quality language.

It takes 1 week – 6 months to complete the Mola and depends on the complexity of the design. The more layers and colours a Mola has, the higher the quality of the textile. Moreover, the excellence of the sewing is important and displays higher quality when the thread is barely visible on the Mola.

The Mola fabric is sourced and fair traded directly from the Indigenous Kuna community in Colombia and Panama. Whilst the handbags are designed and handmade by artisans in Bogotá, Colombia where they skilfully sew the Mola onto the bag creating a masterpiece.

History:
The origin of the Mola tradition began when Kuna woman used to paint their bodies with geometric designs using natural colours.

Later the Kuna woman decided to paint these designs onto their clothes and blouses.
Around 150-170 years ago the Kuna woman then stated creating Mola textiles to decorate their blouses by stitching their colourful creations onto them.

The designs are realistic or abstract and represent flowers, animals, birds, the sea and in general all the wonderful nature found around them.
