Sustainability: PLA is a material made out of renewable sources such as cornstarch, sugar cane and tapioca roots, which makes it close to carbon neutral. It's biodegradable under specific conditions so it shouldn't degrade in its life cycle but once commercially composted it will break down into water, carbon dioxide and other organic compounds, no different to a compostable coffee cup lid or cutlery.
