Many traditions around the world consider the oak to be a sacred tree due to its robustness and majesty. It was considered that there was a strong power relationship with the heavens because oaks attract lightning and therefore control thunder and storms. These trees were thus in contact with the deities and represented them in some way on Earth.
Symbol of moral and physical strength, as attested by its Latin expression, robur, the same term used for robustness and strength, the oak represents the tree par excellence and, through it, the center or axis of the World. In the Middle Ages, oak was considered to have a magical influence on the weather and oak was part of the witchcraft potions that caused thunderstorms and storms. It was the tree of Zeus in Greece, of Jupiter in Rome, and of several other gods in Northern and Eastern Europe. The wood of the goddess Diana was full of oak trees that were also the symbol of the goddess. The crowns that honored Roman soldiers for their deeds in battle were made of oak leaves and acorns.
Its importance as a means of communication between Heaven and Earth, or between men and deities, is notorious in many cultures. The oak has great relevance in biblical symbology. Abraham received God's revelations at an oak tree, both in Hebron and in Shechem. The Old Testament also mentioned that Abraham's abode in Hebron was next to a leafy oak tree. Odysseus, in Odyssey, consults the oak of Zeus on his return home. Pliny the Elder mentioned the Celtic Druids by relating their name to the Celtic name for oak, duir, and hence they came to be known later as "oak men". This comparison was due to the fact that the Druids were considered men of wisdom and strength, qualities also attributed to the oak. The Celts took the oak tree as a deity and a symbol of welcome or home and also a kind of temple, given its strong trunk and its thick branches and foliage. For this reason, in Ireland, churches were called dairthech, "houses of oak," the same name that among the Druids meant sacred grove.
