Saint John the Merciful was born around 555 AD. in Amathus of Cyprus, today's Limassol. His parents, Epiphanius and Eucosmia, were wealthy but also pious people and passed on to their son the deep faith in God. John received a great education and showed great zeal in the study of the Bible. high quality When in 610 AD. the patriarchal throne of Alexandria was left without a pastor, the emperor Heraklius, at the urging of the prefect of Egypt Nikitas, promoted John to the throne. When the Persians occupied Jerusalem in 614 AD, a large number of refugees arrived in Alexandria. The Saint treated them in a unique way, saving them from hunger and hardship. The emperor Heraklius was informed of the Saint's huge work and invited him to go to Constantinople to honor him. However, due to a divine vision, he changed course and headed to his hometown of Cyprus, where he died peacefully in 619 AD, at the age of 64. The Church celebrates his memory on November 12 of each year.
